11.2009 - Association of Hazardous Materials Professionals (National Meeting)
"Making Audits Work for You"

This session was among the most highly rated at the conference. Auditees are a critical component of auditing programs that are overlooked - and often overworked. This presentation helped the audience understand the auditing process, what they should and should not do before, during and after an audit. When auditees are prepared, the entire program benefits.

04.21.09 - Auditing Roundtable National Meeting
"A Word About Metrics" - San Antonio, TX
Hileman's role as the Meeting Chair and also a presenter facilitated different ways of viewing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Sustainability. The absence of regulatory requirements eases enforceable compliance requirements, but poses a different set of challenges to develop KPIs that are as unique as the companies that use them.

Moderator and presenter, in collaboration with World Resources Institute.

SPEAKER TOPICS

Douglas Hileman is well-versed to speak on a broad range of topics in the areas of Sustainability, Compliance, Environmental and Sarbanes-Oxley. Use the Contact Us form to submit inquiries as to availability and rates. Below is a sampling from prior presentations.

  • Making Business Sense of ‘Going Green’:   Environmental consciousness is all the rage, but are there too many ideas?  Mr. Hileman notes that no company or enterprise can be all things to all groups.  He provides guidance on how your enterprise should identify and evaluate the myriads of requirements, standards, risks, and opportunities –and focus on what makes sense for you.
  • Sustainability Strategies, Communications, and Reporting:  Environmental, social, and economic performance is demanded by more stakeholders and for more purposes.  Mr. Hileman provides tips on designing, implementing, reporting and communicating the performance of these programs based upon experience with companies in many sectors, and operating in territories around the world.
  • The Changing Face of “Compliance” – and How to Cope:  “Compliance” conjures up mounds of regulations, agency inspections, and the risk of violations.  The face of “compliance” is changing to include other legally-binding commitments, conformance with industry or topical standards, company commitments, and expectations from shareholders, employees, customers, and a range of stakeholders.  Failure to maintain compliance with these requirements risks loss of business, key employees, or business reputation.  Mr. Hileman identifies gaps typical in many organization in implementing systems to achieve and monitor compliance with this growing body of requirements.
  • Financial Reporting and Disclosure of Environmental Matters:  Accounting rules require financial reporting of environmental liabilities and retirement obligations.  As an environmental specialist at a Big 4 accounting firm, Mr. Hileman worked six annual audit cycles for some of the largest global companies, evaluating conformance of portfolios of environmental liabilities in excess of $1 billion.  Mr. Hileman shares evolution of policies, procedures, controls, including perspectives gained by the first enforcement of its kind by the SEC.
  • Sarbanes-Oxley – What Does It Really Mean for Environmental?:  Most Corporate managers are familiar with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements for financial reporting.  There are other requirements for certification of compliance, procedures for managing complaints, and other elements of corporate governance.  Mr. Hileman draws from six years of experience at a Big 4 Accounting firm to discuss applicability of Sarbanes-Oxley to environmental management, how many companies implement it, potential gaps in company programs – and trends for improvement.
  • Environmental for “Everybody Else”:  Interest in the Environment is strong – and the impact, opportunities – and risks – for people outside the typical Environmental function has never been greater either.  Mr. Hileman draws upon his diverse background to provide an enterprise view of Environmental (and Sustainability) functions, and how it affects including from Accounting, Human Relations, Investor Relations, IT, Maintenance, Real Estate, Shared Services, Supply Chain, and Tax – and a few more.
